NYMag Parties Like It’s 1973

To celebrate the launch of HBO’s 1970s-era show Vinyl (produced by Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese) we treated readers to a temporary time-warp, imaginging what a New York local website would have looked like 40 years prior.

Among the throwbacks were the style section talks about the return of elegance, a look at opposing views on the state of New York City, and a profile of Ahmet Ertegün, president of Atlantic Records, as well as a series of custom infographics of memorable 1973 New York City bars, clubs and art spaces.

All the pieces are original New York magazine articles from 1973–the year Vinyl takes place–with stories in music, culture, drugs, style, and more. We used era-appropriate fonts, colors and imagery, with each article being digitized from the archives for the first time. The concept was so well received by both consumers and the trades, Viacom approached us to create a similar activation for I AM JFK Jr. on Spike TV.
