Waking Up Early with CBS News

The Early Show broadcast on CBS 6 days a week on 5th Avenue, next to the iconic Apple Store. But the show was in third place for its 15 year run, competing against the formidable TODAY and the growing Good Morning America. Last place meant that they had nothing to lose and were willing to try new things. Tourists who make up the plaza audience were not going to show up to the outside taping when they could be heading to Rockefeller Center or Times Square. So, the show had devised a very clever strategy for The Plaza: use it as a public relations tool. Companies and organizations would need to bring their own crowds, brand ambassadors, mascots and more, and we would guarantee them national coverage. If a celebrity was attached, we would build an outdoor segment around them. CBS had also partnered with the Grayline Bus to help shuttle guests from their Times Square hotels to the show’s filming location. My role, as an intern, was to help coordinate and plan these segments – with PR firms, talent bookers, Grayline buses, and other businesses – to create memorable moments with consumers and major corporations.
